Amidst the Giants: Malaysia and the Trade War




The United States (US) and China are among the top trading partners of Malaysia; any trade policies that harm trade between these countries could thus affect Malaysia’s trading position, especially since Malaysia’s intermediate goods. Exports with China is significant. Furthermore, policy uncertainty by these countries and other retaliating countries could dampen the overall growth of the region and consequently, Malaysia. In brief, the article presents the events of trade war sentiments and policy actions in a chronological order, up until July 2018.


The article also presents a short background on the history of trade wars, in which no country has benefited from. It then illustrates how the trade war could affect Malaysia’s trading position through trade in intermediate goods and policy uncertainty sentiments. Finally, the article provides concluding remarks.
